It is not uncommon for students to focus more on their instrumental/vocal training than on the broader skills of Musicianship. In later years of schooling, students often struggle with the Aural Perception component of the Music curriculum, and the application of broad musicianship skills on their instrument is one way that this can be addressed; having access to quality classroom music where the skills are developed in a sequential way is also important. These skills are fundamental to high-level performance in amateur or professional settings, and a lot of thought needs to go into how to develop them so that students can apply the skills with a sense of ease and proficiency. Ideally, the skills are developed from early childhood, in the home and at school. Teachers need to have access to professional development if they are to be able to bring these skills into the classroom – they need to be able to teach a classroom of children with varying levels of skill. This is a skill in itself – how to challenge and engage all students.
The social aspect of music making can play an important role during high school years. Research shows that young people can experience loneliness and social isolation – a global health issue – despite having access to modern communication networks. Music communicates ideas, strengthens health, and allows people to connect through group music making.
