Benefits of music

Primary School Music

Cottage Music Foundation provides music mentoring for general-classroom teachers and for music teachers that are inexperienced and new to the job of teaching. Teachers in schools have a range of needs – some need to develop their own fundamental Musicianship/Aural Training and Music Theory knowledge; some have extensive musical training, but lack pedagogical expertise needed to build music programs; some teachers are naturally musical, but are lacking in both of these areas, so need extensive guidance.

Our programs develop core musicianship skills including singing, rhythm and social music-making. They develop music literacy and aid general literacy and language skills. Research has shown that quality music boosts creativity and benefits learning across all subject areas. It brings psychologial, neurological and physiological benefits. It enhances wellbeing, regulates mood and aids in emotional development. Interactive music-making builds social interaction skills and a sense of community, reducing loneliness. It develops communication and cooperation/collaboration skills. It also energises a class and encourages whole-body learning.

Music has been shown to develop greater inhibitory control, a skill that helps throughout life. Music motivates, and it has been found to improve behaviour, participation and rates of school attendance. It also cultivates empathy and an understanding of the needs of others.
